Sinds de introductie in 1976 is de Music Man StingRay omarmd als een van 's werelds klassieke elektrische basontwerpen. Om dit te vieren introduceert Ernie Ball Music Man met trots de 40 jaar oude "Old Smoothie" StingRay, een getrouwe reproductie van StingRay prototype #26, ontworpen voor Sterling Ball die tijdens deze periode bezig was met het testen en ontwikkelen van de originele prototypes in de jaren '70. De naam 'Old Smoothie' is genoemd naar zijn vloeiende, gelijkmatige toon die doet denken aan de zeer populaire vintage Music Man StingRay sound. Het is precies gereproduceerd, inclusief het unieke, op maat gemaakte 10 polige onderdelenontwerp, de body headstock en slagplaatvorm, 34-inch schaal esdoorn hals en fretboard, low profile smalle frets, hardware en actieve elektronica. Nieuwe afwerkingsopties voor 2017 zijn onder meer Butterscotch en Mint Green.
